Design Your Office With Your Employees In Mind

Ohio State Beauty Academy

Is it time to re-energize your office? The answer might lie in shifting your mindset from, “what can I get from my employees” to “what can I give them.”

The fact is, offices designed with employees in mind are ahead of the pack.
Maybe you’ve heard of super-sweet offices with putting greens and slides and awesome open areas that inspire creativity and collaboration. Well, it’s not impossible to design just that for your employees.
And it’s a huge benefit.
A Harvard Business Review report states that more than 100 studies have found that the most engaged employees are significantly more productive. But how do companies get more employee engagement?
It is a direct result of companies addressing the needs of their employees: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
From Google to 3M to – locally – the Ohio State Beauty Academy, offices designed for employees invite talent and customers, foster creativity and reflect your company’s values and goals.

1)      PLANNING

INSPIRATION: You want to inspire your employees. You want a heightened sense of creativity, camaraderie and community while giving them the freedom of individualism.
Still, you want to accomplish this while reflecting who your company is. You don’t want a slide or a handball court in the middle of a mortuary. But you can balance classy and professional with comforting and inviting. It just takes planning, ideas and a willingness to step out of the box.

CONSIDER: There’s a lot to think about in the planning stages, and we have some blogs to get you going, such as “Building Your Office from the Inside Out” (http://bit.ly/127HJCK) and “The ‘Lean’ Office” (http://bit.ly/172c4EA).

2)      GET IDEAS, GET GOING

“Creating a cool office space can and should reflect a company’s culture,” says Samantha Zupan, a Glassdoor spokesperson quoted in a March article in Forbes Magazine (http://onforb.es/Y0ySQ9). “It can be a sense of pride for employees and an attractive selling point to recruits.”
Google has a giant slide. Infosys has a bowling alley. Golf companies even have putting greens and driving ranges. Are those too big? Maybe so, but it gets the ideas going, doesn’t it? And you don’t necessarily need big and splashy…

PERSONALITY: Here’s something simple, encourage your employees to bring in personal items such as family photos, plants, snack jars, trinkets, pets? (Hmm, be careful with that one.) It’s free to you and brightens up an office instantly. Plus, it builds a sense of community.

KNOCK DOWN THE WALLS: Is there a rule written that states offices need to be divvied up by walls or cubicles? Why not knock down your walls and create community gathering spots? How about tables and areas where employees can plop down laptop? Give employees the opportunity to work at different spots or create their own. Allowing them this type of freedom will produce amazing results.

ASK YOUR EMPLOYEES: Let your employees invest themselves in the personality of your office and they’re more likely to enjoy it. One person may want their kid to come in and draw on the walls, let’em. Well, check out their art first. Allow each employee to hang a photo on the wall, or decide on the color scheme, or carpet design.
Let your employees invest their ideas, and they’ll become more invested in you.

3)      BENEFITS

MORE PRODUCTIVE: According to Professor Alex Haslam in an article by INC.com (http://bit.ly/Q2D7tT),  people working in areas lined with plants and pictures were 17 percent more productive than those working in bare offices.
“Not only does office design determine whether people’s backs ache, it has the potential to affect how much they accomplish, how much initiative they take, and their overall professional satisfaction,” he is quoted in the article.

ATTRACT TALENT: You want to bring in more talent and energize people, changing your look can be the way to do it.
The competition for top talent is always tough. Imagine bringing in a strong candidate for an interview and wowing them with a fun, cool environment. Something open and hip, lined with paintings and plants, work tables and televisions. Not only will you get the best employees, you’ll keep them happy, and ultimately, you’ll keep them.

KEEP TALENT, KEEP IT FLOWING: When employees enjoy where they work it does two things: It fights turnover and it inspires your employees to enjoy the office.
It’s simple, if your employees are focused more on maximizing their effort and less on the clock, or looking for another job, it’s going to help your bottom line.
